An associationtype descriptive survey was used as the survey design. Study subjects included a basic science teacher and secondary school students from Ile – Ife, Osun State. A sample size of 20 teachers as well as 200 students was chosen using a simple random procedure. Collection of data was done using two research tools. Basic Science Teacher Questionnaire (BSTQ) and Basic Science Preliminary Results (PTRBS). The BSTQ was used to collect information about teachers' educational background and years of teaching experience, and the PTRBS was used to assess students' academic performance in basic sciences. Collected data were analyzed using various statistical measures such as percentage, frequency, standard deviation, mean, and Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC). These analyzes allowed the examination of the relationship between teacher variables (educational background and years of teaching experience) and basic science academic performances of the high school students. The results showed a significant positive association between teachers' educational attainment in Basic Sciences and the academic performances of the students (r=0.775; p<0.05). This suggests that better-educated teachers tend to have a positive impact on the academic performance of students in basic science. Similar to this, the study found a substantial correlation (r = 0.704; p 0.05) between instructors' years of teaching experience and academic success of students in Basic Science. This suggests that teachers with more experience help students perform better in this subject. Based on these results, the study concludes that the academic achievement of junior secondary school student' in Basic Sciences in Ile-Ife, Osun State is significantly affected by educational backgrounds and years of experience of teachers. The findings emphasize how crucial teacher training and expertise are in impacting students' subject-area learning outcomes.
AJEWOLE O. Teachers' influence is always felt in every aspect of the society. All other professionals and workers within the society have at one time or the other passed through the tutelage of a teacher and thus what they now become is a direct outcome of what the teacher has passed or transmitted to them. This paper therefore examines the rebranding of teacher education in Nigeria for expected outcomes. The conceptualization of teacher, teacher education and rebranding was thoroughly examined for lucid comprehension. The need for rebranding teacher education in Nigeria were x-rayed with various illustrations. Mechanical devices for rebranding teacher education were extensively discussed. When any society is unable to provide for the meaningful existence of its members, it perhaps implies that the educational system of that society is at the verge of failure. Based on this premise of thought, this paper critically examines the challenges, problems and structural/contextual deficits in contemporary Nigerian society as credible but perhaps strategic vectors for re-branding of Nigerian educational system. The paper examines practically how Nigerian school system could usefully assist in fixing some major generic problems currently facing the Nigerian nation. Based on this line of thinking as proposed in this presentation, any country with major challenges and problems like Nigeria may need to rebrand her school system along the line of retooling and re-skilling school products to adequately provide solutions to the challenges facing the society. The worth of any educational system may perhaps be best assessed on its intrinsic capacity for promoting societal economic progress, societal self renewal and sustainability of locally meaningful and relevant global standards.
AKINRIMISI Ayomiposi Rebecca, ALAO Kayode Ayodeji Copyright (c) 2023 http://ijcie.oauife.edu.ng/index.php/ijcie/article/view/74 Mon, 16 Oct 2023 00:00:00 +0000 HOME ENVIRONMENT AND PARENTAL OCCUPATION AS CORRELATES OF ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF LOWER PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS' IN BASIC SCIENCE IN ONDO STATE http://ijcie.oauife.edu.ng/index.php/ijcie/article/view/75
The study examined the home environment and parental occupation as correlates of academic performance of lower primary school pupils' in Basic Science in Ondo State, Nigeria. Three research questions and four hypotheses guided the research. The study adopted correlational research design and multistage sampling procedure was used to select 300 pupils and 30 head teachers from six local government areas of the state. Four validated research Instruments-Head Teacher's Opinion on the Realization of Child's Right by the Teacher (HTORCRT), Child's Opinion on Teacher-Child Relationship (COTCR), Observation Tool on Child-Friendly Environmental Status (OTCES) and Pupils Academic Achievement Format (PAAF) were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using simple frequency counts and percentages, Pearson Product Moment Correlation, Regression analysis and t-test. The result revealed that there is a significant relationship between pupils' academic achievement and child friendly environment (r=.74; p<.05). Head-teachers' and pupils' perceptions of child-friendly environment have significant joint contribution to pupils' academic achievement (R=.272, R2=.074, F(3,326)=7.882) while head-teachers' perception (B=.254, t = 4 . 5 1 2 , p < . 0 5 ) a n d c h i l d - f r i e n d l y environmental status (B=.123, t=2.18, p<.05) have significant relative contribution to pupils' academic achievement, the pupils' perception did not (B=.042, t=.746, p>.05). Special need education also aids the integrated participation of learners with special needs, disabilities, and talents. Although there have been prominent issues with special need education in Nigeria in the early 2000s such as low awareness, funding, and non-availability of a standardised national policy; this paper investigates the successes and concerns with special need education in recent times. The level of implementation of the National Policy on Special Needs Education, 2015 was also investigated. The adopted secondary method of data collection, interpretive research philosophy, and inductive research approach aided in the modification of existing theories and findings. Though, the production of cattle is based on range grazing, the nutritive value of the range is generally low depending on vegetation type and season. Cattle require consistent source of protein, energy, minerals, vitamins and water to maintain productivity and health; thus, fodder trees and shrubs complement the diet of cattle with protein, vitamins and minerals which are largely deficient in bush and cereal straw on which the animals heavily depend during the dry season. In line with this, the objective of this paper was to determine the implication of fodder bank establishment on cattle nutrition. Using discursive method, data from secondary sources were reviewed to ascertain the principles for the establishment and management of fodder banks; the factors necessary for the durability of fodder banks; as well as the post-establishment care of fodder banks. Consequently, the paper concluded that, to a region facing livestock feed deficits, the fodder bank concept offers a self-help option for producing good-quality supplementary feed on a sustainable basis. Nevertheless, despite the considerable amount of research that has been carried out, there has been very little on adoption of fodder crops by farmers. Hence, the paper recommended that, there is need to resolve major issues like land tenure, protection of planted plots or labour, so as to enhance effective management of fodder banks.
ISIWU Edward Chukwuka Copyright (c) 2023 http://ijcie.oauife.edu.ng/index.php/ijcie/article/view/89 Mon, 16 Oct 2023 00:00:00 +0000 REBRANDING TEACHER EDUCATION: A PANACEA FOR ENDURING LEARNING OUTCOMES http://ijcie.oauife.edu.ng/index.php/ijcie/article/view/90
The paper examined the current negative trends in almost every aspect of our educational life as manifested in the immoral behaviour of students, riots in our educational institutions and unpatriotic attitudes of some academics. The increasing wave of social vices that has crept into the educational sector and the resultant fallen standard of education is of more concern in the present society. Thus, manifestations of social vices in terms of total disregard for norms and values of the society, degradation of societal virtues as well as collapse of the social institutions is becoming harbinger of the fallen glory of the nation's ivory tower. The onus then lies on the academic community to rise up to the task of evolving a better society in particular and a worthwhile educational system as a whole. This can only become a reality through a number of activities especially, in the education sector which for the umpteen time, is described as instrument par excellence for achieving national objectives, better society inclusive. Reason for this cannot be far-fetched, there is symbiotic relationship between the society and the content of education at any point in time since the societal needs and aspirations determines the nature of education to be provided, thus, education curricular are drawn from such needs and aspirations. It was observed from the study that the Nigerian society has derailed from its erstwhile virtues with grave consequences on the education sector with the society replete of social vices and attendant consequences on education, economic, socio-cultural, political, and national development. As a reflection of these interests, a handful of entrepreneurship policies and development programs have been established and implemented to promote entrepreneurship and harness the benefits therein. Little wonder, the Nigerian government has over the last three decades implemented some policies and programs aimed at promoting entrepreneurship education and boosting entrepreneurial activities in every sector of the economy. Sadly, controversies arise as most of the implemented policies and programs have proved futile and unable to achieve the anticipated results. Hence, this paper stabs to pinpoint the fundamental factors that hinder the efficacy of government efforts at promoting entrepreneurship education in Nigeria. The conceptualization and implementation of entrepreneurship education and development programs by the Nigerian government are examined to identify the inherent weaknesses. Drawing from theoretical literature, empirical and anecdotal sources, this paper a f f i r m s t h a t c o n c e p t u a l i z a t i o n a n d implementation of entrepreneurship education and development programs in Nigeria need finetuning. It campaigns for a distinctive classification to distinguish entrepreneurship from skill acquisition programs, as well as the development and implementation of suitable policies and strategies for entrepreneurial activities. While every sector of the economy needs support and improvements, Nigerian students and prospective entrepreneurs need higher level of support to enable them stir up and rightly channel their entrepreneurial instincts into viable ventures, marketable products and services that would help generate employment and invariably, promote economic growth and development.
AKINYEMI F. These were with a view to improving maize production in the study area. A multistage sampling procedure was employed to select 330 smallholder maize farmers in three states (Osun, Oyo, and Ogun States) in the study area. Primary data were collected with the aid of structured questionnaire while secondary data were collected from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics, and Ricardian model. The results showed that most (70.10%) of the farmers were men, married with a mean age of 47.60±10.74 years and cultivating 1.34±1.49 hectares of farmland on the average. Also, majority (80.06%) of the farmers were aware of climate change but their climate change perception intensity was low (0.27 on the average). Furthermore, dry season temperature (p≤ 0.05), rainy season temperature (p≤ 0.01), dry season precipitation (p≤ 0.1), rainy season precipitation (p≤0.05), dry season maize farming (p≤ 0.05), soil types (Lixisols (p≤ 0.01), Luvisols (p≤ 0.01), and Nitisols (p≤ 0.01)), farmer's sex (p≤ 0.1), formal education (p≤ 0.1), access to credit (p≤ 0.01), distance from farm to a major tarred road (p≤ 0.05), access to climate-related information (p≤ 0.1), and usage of improved maize seed variety (p≤ 0.01) influenced the net revenue of smallholder maize farmers. In conclusion, smallholder maize farmer's use of climate change adaptation strategies improves their net returns to maize production in Southwestern Nigeria.
ADEAGBO Olayinka A., Ph.
